Resolution supporting the Transit for Austin Coalition

WHEREAS, for decades, Austinites have demanded more transportation options to address our growing traffic challenges;

WHEREAS, the Chamber’s Economic Development Committee reviewed Transit for Austin’s mission and recommended to the Board of Directors that the Chamber join the coalition;

WHEREAS, Central Texas’ population is expected to double over the next 20 years, while road capacity is expected to grow only 15% (*Source: CAMPO 2040 Regional Plan, page 50.);

WHEREAS, a comprehensive, city-wide transit system will lead to new jobs and opportunities;

WHEREAS, an efficient transportation system for our City and region must include separate, dedicated pathways for cars, transit, bikes, and pedestrians, instead of all types of transportation sharing the same portions of the road;

WHEREAS, the Capital Metro Transportation Authority’s Project Connect team is in the midst of robust community engagement and all corners of our region are being asked for input on the details of our transit system, including types of transit to include, and how it should operate;

NOW THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED:

Austin Young Chamber supports the development and implementation of a comprehensive, high capacity, frequent transit system for Austin, with dedicated transitways in corridors including Riverside to Austin Bergstrom International Airport, North Lamar, Guadalupe, and South Congress; connections to park and rides around our city; and mobility hubs for easy transfers.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

Austin Young Chamber is a member of the Transit for Austin, a broad coalition of Austin civic organizations, businesses, and community leaders who support a comprehensive rapid transit system for all.
