The “Hello From The Other Side” blog series was launched in response to COVID-19 to share what young professionals think and feel about the changes happening in our community, and how they are finding ways to navigate those changes. We hope that these stories give you insight, hope, encouragement and community as we move forward, together. If you are interested in sharing your own story, please contact us here.

What’s your name, your involvement with AYC?

Ashley Wainscott, on the LEAD Summitt Committee

How are you? Give us three words to describe your current state of mind.

Focused, Empathetic, Curious

Are you currently working/WFH? How does your work day look different than it used to?

The Kitchen table has turned into my work station. I used to regularly meet with people face to face, but I find myself relying on virtual meetings for that interaction time.

How has your industry or position changed as a result of COVID-19?

We are deemed an essential business, but we still have to be very cautious with anyone on our jobsites. We had to redo our project timelines to only accommodate one trade at a time or work that could be done on opposite sides of the home. Many people are not looking to remodel right now due to all the unknowns.

What are you most afraid of right now?

I think the realization that we have no control of the future and what that holds.

What are you most optimistic about right now?

That we will get through this and life will continue on. I’ve enjoyed shifting perspectives that this is opening up new opportunities for connectivity with friends and family, down time, self care and being creative with your business.

What is keeping you sane right now?

Keeping my normal working hours and staying focused on the present moment. Keeping a vision even if it is just for the week. I have to think small right now in order not to overwhelm myself with how long we could be at home.

Are you finding balance in your new daily routine? If yes, what does that look like?

Not a real balance. I am letting myself have a little freedom right now, for example if I want to sleep in later than usual. Since there are so many changes and emotions running through us I am listening more to what I need throughout the day. If I need to find a break for a walk, I will…

Do you find that you have more or less free time right now? Describe.

It’s complicated. LOL More time to focus on the business, but less time to do the things that require me to be out in the field. Overall, I think I feel I have more time because I am spending zero time in traffic.

What are some of your favorite blogs, books or podcasts right now?

Listening to an audiobook on the libby app (free library app!) called Presuasion by Robert Cialdini. Interesting to think more about your customer’s wants and needs to help set them up for success. Also listening to Newsworthy podcast once per day to get the 10 minute unbiased update and that’s all I need.

What’s the strangest impulse purchase you have made online or at a store during COVID-19?

I ordered a bunch of tiny pies because why not?

What is the first thing you will do once the lockdown has been lifted?

See my family and go sit on a patio with a margarita surrounded by other humans. Humans are wonderful.

What advice do you have for other young professionals in Central Texas who are feeling scared, isolated, and anxious about the future?

Stay connected and stay present. We know when we live in the future or past, anxiety and worrisome thoughts appear.
Use this as a reason to get back in touch with the people who you really care about, but have not had as much time to devote to those relationships. Also, do something courageous. Take that leap (indoors, of course).
